Prepare for the New; Protect Against the Next.

In the past, there has been a lot of financial focus on the Baby Boomer generation as they approach retirement and leave the workforce. There has also been lots of chatter about the Millennial generation—some good, some bad—but not much about finance.

I am a Millennial, and to some degree, the rumors you’ve heard are true. We’re a mess. We collectively have a lot of debt and we don’t have a clue what we’re doing with it. We don’t have enough savings. We have jobs that we are thankful for, but we lie awake at night worrying about not being able to save enough to cover expenses, let alone things like retirement or college planning. We have both children and parents relying on us. We have older generations telling us we’re falling behind, that we should own a home by now, that “when I was your age….” but we don’t even know where to begin.

So how do we fix it? How do we challenge our own status quo?

We take ownership. We ask for help. We conquer our fears. We work with a professional who helps us put together a plan. We revisit it annually to make sure it still fits our needs. We listen. We absorb. We learn. We set up systematic savings plans that help us get ahead. We explore different options that might work better for us than they did for our predecessors. We make decisions. We work with someone who makes us feel comfortable. We speak. We take control.

The answer is the first word of every sentence. We do it, together. Let’s get started.
